    Hi Steve,

There actually was an error on the new website that would prevent users from seeing the upgrade code, and I fixed that, so I appreciate it. However, you’re right, it still wouldn’t have worked for you because you never upgraded to CabWriter 3. I’m going to just send you the code in a separate email so you can do the upgrade.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Fernando,

I believe you have a CabWriter Home license, is that correct? If so, could you tell us exactly what the error message was that you got when you entered your license information? You shouldn’t have to get a new license number.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Richard,

I’ve added you to the CabWriter Beta 4 testing group. You should see a new menu item on our website where you can download the latest beta software.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Zack,

As long as you have an up to date support contract, which comes with your purchase of CabWriter 3, there is no additional charge for CabWriter 4. When your first year is up, for example, you’d need to purchase another year’s worth of support contract for $120 to continue support and get CabWriter 5 for no additional charge…

    Thanks,

    Hi Lynn,

This one is definitely out of my league; I’m more cabinets than furniture. I agree with Joe that there are just too many constraints in cabinet design to be able to rely on something like the golden ratio. Whenever I’ve used it for other stuff in the past, it hasn’t been as pleasing to me as other proportions, but I understand it’s significance. It’s definitely a good discussion and would be interested to hear what others have to say…

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Derek,

Sorry you’re experiencing issues. Have you been able to draw boxes under any circumstances, or just when you’re trying to follow along with the closet video? One thing you can do to see if you can draw any boxes at all is to go to File -> CabWriter -> Re-Load Factory Settings (then re-save your file), which will set everything back to factory defaults. After that, try drawing some cabinets. If that works, then you can start changing parameters again one at a time, or in small groups at a time, and draw more cabinets. If you get the error again, you’ll know which parameter is causing it. You have some combination of parameters currently set that is not allowing a cabinet to be drawn without an error, so you want to get back to a known set of parameters, then work your way back.

Let us know if you continue to have problems. You can also send us your SketchUp (.skp) file for us to take a look at…

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Rick,
Historically, I’ve just used veneer that I have lying around as shims. However, lately, I’ve been leaning more towards plastic shims I’m getting from http://www.handi-shim.com/
They come in handy all over the shop and there’s little holes in them that fit nicely over the barrel bolts that hold the cabinets together and you’re done. The smallest one they make is 1/32″ which is typically just about right. If I can’t use those, I drop back to veneer.

    I hope this helps…

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for getting in touch; very wise to get up to speed before diving into the trial.

For doors, we do give a cutlist and draw it part by part. For, drawers, though, you’re right we just draw a cube representing the drawer and give the outside dimensions. We did this because as a low cost program, we had to make choices as to what to implement out of the gate. Since the majority of pro shops purchase their drawers, it seemed like a good compromise. However, we are considering adding the capability in upcoming versions. Most likely, we would continue to draw a cube representing the drawer, but if we know how the drawer is constructed (side thickness, construction method, dovetail allowance, etc.) we could at least generate an accurate cutlist even though the drawer is not drawn part by part. We have also had requests to support things like Blum’s Legrabox, which is a similar problem; generating a parts list based on a set of formulas. In the short term, it wouldn’t be too difficult to create a spreadsheet that took the outside dimensions of the drawers that we provide and turn it into a parts list.
So, in summary, we can accommodate you on the doors right now and hope to support drawer cutlists in the future…

    Thanks again,
    Greg

    Hi Jeremy,
Yes, but if you change the paper size, you have to move all the lines and title block around to resize everything to fit that paper size. I use the D sized format because I have a plotter, but I also have a wide format ink jet printer that will print 13″ x 19″ paper which is almost the same proportion as a 24 x 36 D size, which means I can just shrink it when I do the printing and scale it down. It doesn’t scale well to other paper sizes, so if you want to make a template for a different paper size, you’ll have to manually shrink and move everything. It’s just a bunch of lines and text on the title block layer in Layout. You might think about purchasing this PDF book on LayOut:
    http://www.sketchuptolayout.com
It really helped me better understand LayOut and how to work with it. At the point you’re at, it’s nothing to do with CabWriter and everything to do with using LayOut to it’s fullest advantage and this guide is what I use when I have questions.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Jeremy,

I was trying to download the file to try it out myself, but accidentally deleted it. I’ve re-attached the file from my computer this time. Try downloading it and opening and see if anything happens. I assume you’re able to successfully open other LayOut files?

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Jeremy,

It would be helpful if you could give us a bit more detail when you’re seeing a problem like this. What happens when you try to open the file with LayOut? Do you get an error message? Does nothing happen? What version of LayOut are you using? Does something else occur? Without knowing the details of what’s happening, it’s difficult to diagnose from our end.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Adam,
Sorry for the delayed response, apparently, we are not getting notification from the forum when an item is posted. Unfortunately, what you’re asking is not possible. What you’ll need to do is delete the cabinet and re-draw it combining those two cabinets into one. It’s an interesting thought; we’ll think about it and see if it’s something we need to add in the future…

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Kevin,

The door styles are only supported in SketchUp Pro 2018 and above; are you using CabWriter Home or Pro? The styles other than shaker used tools that showed up in SketchUp Pro 2018, unfortunately.

    Thanks,
