SpectatorHi Jeremy,
You just need to go to this page and follow the instructions to upgrade to Version 6 and obtain a license key for it. Since you’re up to date on your support membership, there will be no additional cost for the license key. Let me know if you have any issues with the upgrade.
Just remember, you must be logged into the website for you to see the upgrade instructions.
Thanks,

SpectatorHi Michael,
Thanks for the suggestion, however if the Story Stick were placed at the back of the cabinet, then after you draw the cabinets you wouldn’t be able to see it. You need to see it for operations such as Edit Story Stick, Edit Cabinet and Move Cabinet. Changing cabinet depth should be a rare requirement. I realize it does happen, but you just need to take the one extra step of moving them backwards. Granted, the original working line is still in the old location, but hopefully this doesn’t happen too often. In any case, it would be such a massive change to the internal code at this point that it would be impractical to implement.
Sorry we can’t help in this case

SpectatorHi Jeremy,
Are you talking about frame and panel drawer fronts or slab drawer fronts? If it’s slab, I don’t think we have a specific setting to oversize those. However, there is a setting on the cutlist tab called Slab Door & Drawer Undersizing that is typically used to compensate for edgebanding and will shrink the size of the slab by however much you put in the box as a parameter. I’ve never tried this, but it’s possible if you put in a negative number, it will grow the slab. I believe you also have to set Enable CNC Cutting to Yes on the Project tab.
Glad you figured out the cutlist issue. Hopefully, its working the way you need now.

SpectatorHi Jeremy,
Sorry for the late reply; I’m traveling. I don’t believe there is a way to oversize the face frame parts in terms of width; Joe can confirm that. I do that as well and run them through my planer on edge, but I just remember to mill them oversize when am processing them. Sorry we don’t have a better solution for that.
As for your last point, are you saying that the stiles and rails for your doors are being oversized, but not on drawer fronts?
Thanks,

SpectatorHi Jeremy,
As Joe mentioned, it might be helpful if you can send us a simple model and a copy of your cutlist where you’re having problems. At this point, we don’t know how to troubleshoot the problem because we can’t see your specific situation and we haven’t run into this one before.
Thanks,

SpectatorHi Jeremy,
If I’m reading this right, you are saying that the oversizing columns are there in the cutlist, but are not being populated, correct? If so, then you need to check the Cutlist Tab in CabWriter where you can indicate how much oversizing you want for different parts, then CabWriter will automatically add the oversizing to those parts and it’ll show up in the cutlist. Also, if you open the Extended Entity Info window and choose any part, you can see what the oversizing is for it and manually change it if you want.

SpectatorHi Don,
Sorry for the late response. I presume you mean rollout shelves behind a hinged door? You’re right, that’s something we haven’t tackled. You don’t need us to try it as a shelf do you? Would it be sufficient to maybe just specify a 1″ tall drawer? Since everyone builds their pullouts a little bit different, we may just want to leave it as drawers of some height. Seems to me the most important thing would be the ability to specify a cabinet type that has a hinged door but lets you specify the number of pullout “drawers” behind it. Let me know if that would work and I’ll discuss it with Joe. I’ve run into this myself quite a bit and I’ve had to specify it as a 1 drawer bank with a full size front then manually add the drawers, but that doesn’t give you any hinge holes.
Thanks for the suggestion,

SpectatorHi Samuel,
No problem; all you have to do is go to this page:
And follow the instructions to purchase your free CabWriter 6 license keys. Let me know if you have any issues when you do that.

SpectatorHi Zack,
So sorry about that; good catch. Apparently, I forgot to update the download page. In the meantime, you can get the latest software by downloading the free trial software and you’ll get the latest version, then just use your current license keys to activate.
Thanks for letting me know…

SpectatorHi Jeffrey,
Thanks for checking in; I’m glad the current video has been helpful. It’s been on my to do list for awhile to post some more videos on cabinet construction, but it just hasn’t happened. However, a former student of mine is building his own kitchen in my shop, so my plan is to document the construction since I’ve updated my construction method to one that’s even more efficient, then I can make a new video showing the new methods. In the meantime, I’d be happy to setup a zoom with you to talk about the changes and answer any questions you might have. Please contact me at [email protected] and we’ll set something up.
Thanks,

SpectatorHi Matthew,
This is actually a fairly easy thing to fix, just hard to describe in words. I was looking to see if we already had a video on this, and we do have one from back in the CabWriter 2 days. I put the link to it down below. It’s worth looking at the video to understand what’s going on, and that method still works, but now there’s an easier way. Instead of deleting the Z layer and the scene, you simply click on the scene you want to change, show the section plane and select it like in the video, but then when you do Create Section from Section plane again, you’ll see a different dialog box as shown in the attachment below. If you check the Use Selected Scene Name? as shown, it’ll fill in the selected scenes name and do all the work behind the scenes to update the Z layer mask and update the scene. Then, you’ll just update your model as normal in LayOut. I’ve added this to the list of videos to update moving forward. Let me know if you can’t get it to work and I’ll try and get a video to you sooner.
Thanks,

SpectatorHi Gary,
For some reason, the order showed as cancelled. I just changed it to Completed, so you should be able to get into it now. Can you give it a try again and see if it works?
Thanks,
Gregcabwriter
SpectatorHi Gary,
Glad it worked. Good luck with version 6!
