    Hi Steve,

While I have never tried this, I believe that if you delete the CabWriter prefix from all of the CabWriter parts you want to orphan it should work. For example, using Entity Info to rename C2LB1 Right Side to Right Side should orphan it from CabWriter. But be careful; sometimes the only thing that makes a part unique is the prefix. For example, C2LB1 Right Side and C11UB1 Right Side would be the same definition name if all you did was delete the prefix. So you might just want to use your own custom prefix. For example, C2LB1 Right Side becomes SK2LBI Right SIde or just S2LB1 Right SIde.

Greg made mention of a problem we are working on. Let me expand a little. Right now the CabWriter Production Documentation command assumes there are only the correct number of component instances in a model. However, some people might like to create exploded views by copying parts and putting them on another layer and then pulling them apart. The problem is that this would inflate the cut list and DXF files because it would include those parts copied to another layer. This week I am working on a solution that requires the user to specify a Cut List scene and a DXF scene that would have only the component instances the user wishes to include in the cut lis and dxf exports. Those scenes would include only the layers with those component instances.

This would partially solve the problem you have above, but not completely. Because, if you copied a CabWriter part to another layer and then modified it for plumbing holes for example, you would have changed the original parts. So you need to still change the prefix. Eventually, we will have this problem resolved when we are able to handle cut out etc. in version 2.0.

Can you email me a copy of your .skp file? If it is too large to email try zipping it. I will look at it and get back to you. Else, write me at [email protected] and we can set up an on-line join.me session.

    Hi Steve,

What is that icon between Make CabWriter Component and Insert a Drawer icons?

The horizontal lines are rather easy to do. What is more difficult is deciding how to group icons. I’ll discuss it with Greg and see what we come up with and share it with you.

    Hi Guys,

Steve is correct, that does work. See the attached images. In cabinet_mode_auto_swap.png notice that everything is as you might expect them given the rules we use concerning grain direction in cabinets. In swap_length_and_width.png notice that everything is as Steve would want them; i.e.the grain is running in the short side direction. Notice that the bottom is the same in both examples, as it should be. Note that you cannot check Cabinet/Resize Mode and Swap L/W? at the same time and get predictable results. You need to choose one or the other.

By the way, let me congratulate Steve for actually reading the User’s Guide. Take note, Greg! ;<) Joe...

    Hi Steve,

How big is your .skp file? Can you zip it and email it to me so I can take a look?

No Problem Steve. As you discovered, Producing a Cut List requires doing things in the right order. That is why we added the File > CabWriter Production Documentation command. It ensures part numbers are assigned before attempting a Cut List.

    Hi Steve,

Sorry I wasn’t available to help you with this (I think I was sleeping). But glad you got it worked out on your own. Let me know if you have further problems.

    Hi Steve,

I have read and understood these requests, and why they may be necessary given the problem of copying and pasting holes with native SketchUp tools.I put these on the wish list and will discuss them with Greg. No promises, but I’ll see what we can do to get it into version 2.0.0. It may be a week or so before I can be more specific but I will get back to you on this.

I sent you an email with the problem and solution. Let me know if you didn’t get it.

    Hi Steve,

You found the correct default to set the thickness of the trim (maybe 1/2″ or 3/4″), but, unfortunately, the height of the trim piece is set by the thickness of the bottom. So there is no setting for making it 13/16″ tall. What you can do manually, for each trim piece, is go to the Window > Extended Entity Info dialog box and use the Cabinet/Resize Mode to Resize Width By some amount (probably greater than 1/16″) and then finish size it to 13/16″.

If you want to use a bottom rail that is proud of the bottom by 1/16″ there are defaults that will permit that. Let me know it that is what you want.

    Hi Ty,

There are 29 components in a face frame style single box base cabinet with one door. If this were a 3 drawer bank there would be 37 components. In CabWriter, a single cabinet can be one box or multiple boxes. For example, if you were to create a three box cabinet with one box a standard base with one door, a three drawer bank box and the third box a standard base with drawer as shown in the attached image that would be 61 components. So it all depends on your definition of “a few cabinets”.

    Hi Todd,

Sorry for the late response. I am going to produce a video either tomorrow, Wednesday, or Thursday. If you can wait for that I think you will find it very useful. If you need a faster response we can set up an on-line join.me session tomorrow. If that is your choice, email me at [email protected], let me know where you live, your time zone and a time in your time zone that you would like the session to start.

    Hi Matt,

No need for an apology. I am happy you are learning CabWriter and am here to help any way I can.

Overlay doors/drawers, at the moment, work a little differently. When CabWriter was originally architected and written it ignored overlay doors on the assumption that most custom cabinetmakers didn’t use them. Over time we had enough people ask for them that I added them, but in a way that caused the minimum re-write at the time. Essentially what happens is that the user selects door/drawer sizes as they had originally; i.e. in the Face Frame tab with the red/green lights, but as thought it were a face frame design with all stiles and rails drawn, and inset drawers. Then CabWiter takes that drawer height, adds two gap and two overlay defaults and draws the door/drawer to that dimension, botu overlayed on the face frame.

As an example, see the attached images of an overlay door/drawer set-up. Notice all stiles and rails are drawn. Though you can’t see it on the Face Frame tab, Overlay is selected on the project tab. In this set-up I used 3/32″ gaps and 3/8″ overlay. The 5 5/16″ top drawers will be drawn 6 1/4″ high; (2 x 3/32″) + (2 x 3/8″) + 5 5/16″ = 6 1/4″.

In the next beta release we are reconfiguring how a user selects a cabinet style and Overlay will be an equal partner with Face Frame (inset) and Frameless. In fact the choices will be Face Frame / Hybrid, Frameless / Hybrid or Overlay. See new_dropdown.jpg. I will take a look at how much code change is needed to adjust the Drawer Height calculator and may change it to accept final overlay dimensions. I know I owe you a video on how to use this calculator, but may wait to see if I make this change so I can include overlay changes.
