    Hi Richard,

My apology. I didn’t recall out last emails and I thought you were just coming on board today. By all means provide whatever guidance and feedback you have. We value the feedback and constructive criticism. The release that will come out Friday does have support for overlay designs. I have attached a zipped .skp file you can take a look at. And if there are problems you are having just give a shout and I would be happy to help.

    Hi Richard,

I take it you have not tested out CabWriter yet? We froze code for revision 1.0 today and expect to have it available for purchase on Friday of this week. But a 30 day trial with full functionality is available to all potential customers. You should check back on Friday to give it a spin.

I am hoping that Greg joins in here. He is the real cabinetmaker. I am a ‘cabinetmaker’, but my work is limited to furniture, not much in the way of custom cabinets., though I have built about five kitchens over my life as a weekend warrior. I primary contribution here is writing software. That said I have never been know to shy away from giving my opinion ;<) I have researched on line for the definition of full overlay and half overlay, and while there is some consistency you can also find a lot of disagreement. CabWriter doesn't much care about the terms themselves. Full overlay can be whatever the user defines it to be in the parameters they set. If it is a frame-less design you can specify a gap of any dimension. If it is a face frame overlay design you can specify the overlay. If it is an inset design you again specify the gaps. With CabWriter you can present a client three designs: inset, overlay and frame-less overlay or a fourth which is a combination of face frame and frame-less (Greg uses that style a lot with his customers). If you are real gutsy presenter you can change from one type to the other in real time with the client watching simply by loading a new parameter file and re-drawing the cabinets. One thing we don't do in CabWriter is draw cabinets with single sheet dividers. Our view has been that building each box with its own sides makes construction quicker, easier and saves substantially in labor costs. The small increase in material costs if far out weighed by labor savings, especially when you consider building out for hinges on face frame designs. But I would love to hear your opinion on that. As I said, version 1.0 is locked down, but shortly we will begin working on version 2.0 and we will again want beta testers to help define what changes and new functionality we need in 2.0. If you are interested let us know and we will keep you on the beta tester list. Joe....

p.s. You shouldn’t have to do anything special when producing the cut list. It will reflect the deeper setting you are after.

    Hi Kevin,

How are you trying to change the extension of the blind corner base? You should be using the Blind Corner Displacement parameter. See the attached image. Simply change it to the dimension you want and draw the cabinet. Once the cabinet is drawn the parameters are stored in each cabinet part. To retrieve them choose a part and use the Retrieve Cabinet Defaults tool. You can save these defaults to a file using the Save CabWriter Defaults icon and access them later with the Open and Load CabWriter Defaults icon.

See Greg’s video on Blind Corner Cabs at https://cabwritersoftware.com/portfolio-item/cabwriter-drawing-blind-corner-cabinets/ . You will find many other videos ar https://cabwritersoftware.com/education/cabwriter-training/ .

    Hi John,

Thank you for your kind words. I started woodworking at about the same age. In fact that is where I got the idea for the story stick. I was about eight at the time and my brother who was 12 years my senior was a young carpenter. My family was poor and everyone worked and supported the family in whatever way they could. My brother was building a house for my sister. When completed he started to build kitchen cabinets. I have vivid memories of him asking my sister what she wanted for cabinets and he would record it on a stick about 10′ long and about an inch square in cross section. I remember asking him what he was going to do with the stick and remember him calling it a story stick and how he would bring it to the shop in lieu of shop drawings. The cabinets, by the way, were entirely made of plywood, including the door/drawer fronts and boxes; pretty common in the fifties. When Greg and I started on this project it seemed natural to me to use the story stick paradigm and it has worked out great.

I am sending you an installation file for Construction Plus which has the moisture calculator extension. I will send it to your email address. Let me know if you have any problems.

    Greg,

When you get a chance can you increase the size of the file you can attach to these forum messages? I had the same problem the other day. Some of these SketchUp files can be quite large. Thanks,

    Hi John,

Yes, CutList Bridge 4 (and follow-ons) will still be available as its own extension. Just curious about the pricing. Are you a professional cabinetmaker? Which of the editions (Home, Pro or CNC) were you hoping to purchase?

    Thanks Johan,

As soon as I get rev. 1.0 out I am going to work on a video series to replace the very old set of six videos already on this website. CabWriter has come a long way since then and they are quite outdated.

    Hi Johan,

Thank you for your kind words concerning CabWriter. CabWriter started out as kind of a hobby project. Greg and I didn’t envision it as a powerful tool for professional cabinetmakers that it has become. If successful in the market we will for sure provide localization of language including Dutch. But that will take a while. In the mean time I am interested in helping you all I can to get you trained and using CabWriter. What would be most helpful; video tutorials or written documentation. Both would be in English first. We could also consider tutorials via a technology such as GoToMeeting. My Dutch is non-existent so it would have to be in English also.

Also, you can always reach me at [email protected] with specific issues. I can provide a Dropbox to pass models back an forth so I can answer specific issues of modeling.

    Hi Guys,

Overlay doors are almost done. See attached image. I am beginning to work on overlay drawers but I have another question/issue. I am also assuming that mid rails are always used and drawn in overlay designs. Correct?

OK Guys. Thanks. I’m working on it for rev 1.0. Hope to have something in a few days for you to test.

    Hi Guys,

I am looking at implementing overlay doors and I have some comments and questions:
    1. I assume that overlay doors always use face frames and that the face frame always includes a lower rail. Is this correct?
    2. In cabinets with two doors I assume there is no mid stile between the end or connector stiles i.e. where the two doors meet with a gap between them. Correct? If you want a mid stile for this first implementation you will have to add it yourself; a simple matter for creating a component and using the Re-Name Component tool.
    3. I assume that the hinges mount on the stile and door and not to the sheet good side. Therefore no hinge holes are drawn for overlay doors. Correct?

Are there any other thoughts before I begin implementation?

    Hi Les,

Do you make your own doors? If the answer is no, would it help to have the overall size of the doors adjusted for overlay exported in a spreadsheet? Or is it the ability to visually show a client that you most need?
